Description: Vintage Shirtings Butterfly Applique Oversized Throw QuiltOversized Throw Quilt : 56” w x 74” l (standard throw quilt size : 50 ” w x 65” l)Quilt Block Pattern : Applique Butterflies This original appliqued summer coverlet was found from an estate sale in New England and purchased off of Etsy. Each butterfly is set onto a rough 10” square of cream muslim and attached by applique with a black/deep navy blue embroidery thread. The quilt measures 6 blocks across by 8 blocks down. The individual blocks were sewn together and trimmed out in cotton blue fabric. I believe the fabric of the butterflies are from vintage Hathaway shirting prints. These cottons were used at the Hathaway Shirt factory in Waterville, Maine, to create the famous Hathaway Men's Shirts for decades (1853-2002). During the Depression Era and after, housewives could purchase applique quilt kits from manufacturers with various shapes already cut out. As all these butterflies are the same size and shape, I believe this is what must have been done to create this original summer coverlet. The vintage applique butterflies have no fading, staining, discoloration, rips, or tears. There is one butterfly block in the third to last row that has the butterfly body embroidered upside down. This error from the original quilter does not distract from the overall beauty and precision of the remaining embroidery, in fact, I feel it adds uniqueness to the piece! The original blue cotton trim in between the blocks has some wear typical in the middle seams and at some of the ends. The cream muslim background fabric has one or two areas with very minor discoloration; almost unnoticeable. I have added a Warm and White 100% cotton batting, a 100% cotton lavender flower fabric print backing that I feel matched the colors of the time of the original coverlet, a blue fabric binding (closely matched to original inner blue trim fabric) and quilted all the layers together in a linear cross pattern. Quilting thread is a cream on the front and back. This converted summer coverlet to quilt is unmistakably a unique piece! It would be a wonderful girls bed spread or reading chair quilt. The creamy muslim, fresh butterfly colors, and rich blue trim and binding could easily be used to add a farmhouse style vibe to any room!
