In very cold weather or snowstorm the side flaps can be folded down and tied under the chin to protect lower face and ears, whereas the rear part when unfolded will provide superb cover for the lower neck. Size Medium SIZE is marked 60 cm by the manufacturer but they tend to run a bit on the smaller side: the circumference of the hat measured on the inside is 22”, so it appears to be perfect for someone with head size 57 - 58 (US hat size 7⅛ - 7¼). Size Large SIZE is marked 61 cm by the manufacturer but they tend to run a bit on the smaller side: the circumference of the hat measured on the inside is 22.5”, so it appears to be perfect for someone with head size 58 - 59 (US hat size 7¼ - 7⅜). Size Large / Extra Large SIZE is marked 62 cm by the manufacturer but they tend to run a bit on the smaller side: the circumference of the hat measured on the inside is 23”, so it appears to be perfect for someone with head size 59 - 60 (US hat size 7⅜ - 7½ ). Size Extra Large SIZE is marked 63 cm by the manufacturer but they tend to run a bit on the smaller side: the circumference of the hat measured on the inside is 23.5”, so it appears to be perfect for someone with head size 60 - 61 (US hat size 7½ - 7⅝). Size 2XL SIZE is marked 64 cm by the manufacturer but they tend to run a bit on the smaller side: the circumference of the hat measured on the inside is 24”, so it appears to be perfect for someone with head size 62 (US hat size 7¾ ). Although it will stretch with wear, we would recommend going at least two sizes larger than your actual European hat size when selecting the marked size for your ushanka. Some call it a military hat which is incorrect: this is actually a popular civilian model of the Soviet / Russian military ushanka. It’s in made of much finer materials than its military counterpart. The faux fur is attractive and soft; it looks very much like rabbit fur but far more durable than natural fur, won’t shed. The quilted lining provides additional protection from the sub-freezing temperatures. The hat is in BRAND NEW factory fresh condition, complete with a manufacturer’s label saying “Made in Belarus” (former Soviet republic of Belorussia or “White Russia”). The hat was made at the same factory that produced fur hats during the Soviet era. It was manufactured specifically for import to Russia, so it’s not surprising the label is in Russian language. This hat is both a fashion statement and practical winter gear. Some people even choose to wear it for downhill skiing although we doubt it will provide enough protection in a fall or collision, and we wouldn’t recommend using it in lieu of the proper ski helmet.
