Description: This 3.5" 6lb spherical ammunition was known as Shot on account of its solid nature. This projectile is in excellent condition, with a smooth surface. The 6pdr gun was a typical top deck/quarter deck armament of the Georgian and early Victorian naval vessel, on account of its moderate weight, compared with the mass of the larger lower deck guns. The 6lb long gun was also a firm favourite as a stern or bow chaser, with peak ranges stretching out to almost 2000 yards. This ball was recovered from a Georgian through Victorian Naval gunnery range, which was used to train gunners and gunnery officers right up until the late Victorian era. This ball is the genuine article, from the golden age of sail. Mill balls or sporting shot puts can be tricky to spot - and caution is advised when buying "cannonballs" from elsewhere.
