These hardened pieces of resin are called tears. Frankincense is graded based on color, purity, aroma, and place of origin. There are several species and varieties of Boswellia trees, each producing a slightly different resin. Hojari, wildcrafted, in the mountains of Salalah, Oman, is generally considered the highest grade. The resin is characterized by a citrus-eucalyptus smell with woody/earthy undertones.
