Description: Justin II and Sophia | AE Follis Reference: SB 369 Date: 574-575 CE Obverse: D N IVSTINVS P P AVG, Justin on left, Sophia on right, seated facing on double-throne, both nimbate, Justin holding cross on globe, Sophia holding sceptre Reverse: Large M, ANNO to left, cross above, regnal year (X = 574-575 CE) to right, B (officina) below, mintmark NIKO in exergue Mint: Nicomedia Size: 28.4 mm Weight:9.70 grams I've always gotten a kick out of the "fishy" portrait style from the Nicomedia mint during this time. But hey, at least they didn't blunder the legends like those schmucks over at the Constantinople mint. A nice follis from the mid-late reign of Justin II. In 574 CE, shortly after this coin was struck, Justin II would adopt his general Tiberius II as Caesar and heir. In 578 CE, Justin II elevated Tiberius II to Augustus and shortly thereafter died. Justin II was Justinian I's immediate successor and his reign was fraught with foreign policy issues. Trying to match the legacy of his uncle, Justinian I, Justin suspended tributes to the Empire's belligerent neighbors. This ultimately backfired and resulted in renewed war with the Persians and a Lombard invasion of Italy. At the end of his reign, Justin II would suffer a mental breakdown and power would de facto be transfered to his wife Sofia and his adopted son, the general Tiberius II.
