Description: A dynamic religious etching on paper with small margins titled “Joseph Telling His Dreams” (B. 37, H. 160, BB. 38-E) by Rembrandt Van Rijn, 1638. Signed and dated, Rembrandt f 1638. A very fine 17th century impression of the third and final state, with a shadowed face of a man in a turban behind Jospeh. The craftsmanship and details in this etching are remarkable. The characters have diverse expressions, and the grouping of figures creates a dynamic composition. These elements were not explored to this extent in the etching medium prior to Rembrandt, which is why he has been coined as one of the greatest etchers of all time. Rembrandt was known for his religious paintings and etchings, so this provides a unique opportunity to collect a fascinating example within the artist’s oeuvre. This impression, as stated above, is from the third state of six, and the last where Rembrandt himself exclusively worked on the plate. Provenance: From a private collection. Purchased from Galerie Micheal (Beverly Hills, CA). Gallery tag on verso and original paperwork is included in this lot. Dimensions: 4.375”h x 3.25”w (image size) / 19.5”h x 18”w x 1.5”d (framed). In exceptionally good vintage condition, slight foxing that is consistent with age.
