Description: A fine early modernist color monotype or monoprint by British printmaker John J. Witcombe (1872-1918). The image is a post-impressionist landscape featuring a windmill, pond and lone tree. It is hand signed in pencil and dated 1914 by the artist. Good sized, the image measures approx. 10 3/4 x 15 1/2 inches, outer frame size is approx. 19 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches. Not examined out of frame, but it appears to be in excellent condition, has a good quality framing job that looks British in origin. Witcombe has another windmill monotype in the collection of the Bridport Museum Trust: https://artuk.org/discover/artists/witcombe-john-j-18721918 A monotype or monoprint is a type of print made by an artist creating a painting (usually on glass) and then impressing the wet painting onto paper. Only one or two impressions can be made before the painting is ruined and rendered useless as a printing plate. Monotypes are the most uncommon prints and the most closely related to paintings. John J. Witcombe (1872-1918) was an English West Country painter and printmaker. He had become especially well known for his monotypes, particularly in the period up to the beginning of the First World War and in the summer of 1914 had been invited to promote an exhibition of his work in Brussels. In painting, he became influenced by the work of the post-impressionists, and a painting in this new style was particularly well received at the International Exhibition of 1916. In 1918, the year of his death, another work of his at the International Exhibition was reproduced in the magazine "Colour". Witcombe taught at the Bath School of Art and at Downside Abbey School, he also acted for a time as curator of the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath. Witcombe has works in the collections of the Victoria Gallery, the Bridport Museum Trust, and the Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery.
