Description: In September 1980, after 22 months of negotiations, the U.S. and China signed major agreements covering trade, consular service, shipping, and commercial aviation. In anticipation of the agreement, the Civil Aeronautics Board accepted applications from seven domestic carriers to operate a route between New York and Beijing with possible stopovers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Tokyo and Shanghai.
