Each vase has a baluster form with a domed cover surmounted by a pinecone finial. The front of the first vase is beautifully hand-painted with a portrait of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, depicted in his favorite uniform, the Chasseur à Cheval of the Imperial Guard, adorned with the Legion of Honour. The second vase is finely hand-painted with a portrait of his wife, Empress Joséphine Beauharnais. The empress is depicted wearing a neoclassical garment adorned with a diadem, necklace, and earrings. Both portraits, beautifully framed in hand-painted, raised, gilt frames, bear the unmistakable signature of the artist, Claire Maglin Rochette, adding a touch of authenticity and value to these vases. Claire Maglin Rochette was a well-known celebrated Sevres painter, she worked at the Sevres factory with her father A. Rochette in the second half of the 19th Century. The reverse side is intricately hand-painted in raised gilt, featuring a French Imperial eagle. The tops of the covers, necks, and feet are painted in raised gilt with an Imperial Louver Wreath. Each vase rests on a solid gilt bronze (ormolu) canted square base. The green is the color of Napoleon's favored uniform of the colonel, the Chasseur à Cheval of the Imperial Guard. Both vases are marked on the interior of the covers with a hand-painted Sevres manufacturing mark. In late 1739 – early 1740 the Sevres Porcelain Factory opened in the Royal Château of Vincennes, sixteen years later in 1756 the factory moved to the village of Sevres located outside of Paris and in route to Louis XV Palace of Versailles where it became the preeminent porcelain manufacturer in Europe. When the company ran into financial difficulties, the King who had become an avid client bought out the shareholders and became the sole owner. The factory remained in the royal family until it was nationalized following the French Revolution. The range of objects produced in the 19th century was enormous, as were the types of decoration that they employed. The Sevres factory produced ninety-two new designs for vases. The factory is still in production today. The Sevres ceramic was highly valued among the upper classes in Europe, America, and the Ottoman Empire. As a result, many European manufacturers created products, including vases, in the Sevres style. These items are often labeled on the international art and antiques market as "Made in Sevres style" or are incorrectly identified as genuine Sevres pieces. Both vases I am offering for sale have a hand-painted authentic Sevres mark on the interior of their covers. Furthermore, the portraits of Emperor Napoleon and Empress Josephine are hand-signed by the period painter Claire Maglin Rochette, who worked for Sèvres, confirming that these vases were indeed made by the Sèvres Manufacture. MEASUREMENTS (approximately): Height: 39.5cm (15.55 inches) Width:16cm (6.3 inches) CONDITION: In very good condition , except for few minor scratches a testament of age and usage.
