Description: Our client's exceptional pair of antique French bookcases from the Second Empire period, circa 1850s, measure 84 by 57 by 21 inches and feature mahogany veneers and well cast ormolu bronze mounts in a variety of neoclassical and mythological motifs, including Pegasus figures, butterflies, masks, stars, laurel wreath, anthemions and the large figures of the winged male gods, Hercules and Ares. All original hardware present except keys are missing. Apparently unsigned. Their craftsmanship is comparable to the works of the finest Parisien ebenistes of the 19th century, such as Paul Sormani. Each in good condition with scuffs, scratches, nicks and small veneer losses, a gouge to the cornice on the left side of one, some stress hairline cracks. Modern galvanized bolt/nut structural repair to interior. Rubbing and oxidation wear to the gilt bronze mounts.
