This set is a genuine Labour of Lust that gathers up the best of the Basher’s records, digging up many rare Nuggets of Nick in the process. In addition to a fourth disc packed with unreleased live tracks, demos, home recordings and miscellaneous rarities, Discs 1, 2 and 3 reward lovers of Lowe with numerous hard-to-find goodies – B-sides, compilation cuts and more – including a rare early version of “Cruel to Be Kind,” tacked onto the flipside of a single a year before his manager talked him into recording it anew, resulting in Nick’s sole U.S. hit, and a gorgeous solo acoustic rendition of his “(What’s So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.” And the fact that nearly all the album tracks come from CDs that are currently out of print makes this box doubly valuable. The four discs are placed inside a 6 x 10” digibook with a 24-page booklet packed with superb liner notes and photos galore. Call yourself a Nick Lowe devotee? Then you deserve to treat yourself to the toothsome pop delights of The Doings. For some unearthly reason, however, this set was only available for a very brief time before going out of print, and never came out in the USA at all. All four discs are near mint. However, there is one caveat with the packaging: the booklet is still included, but has come detached from the box. (To be fair, it wasn’t very securely fastened in the first place. About half the copies we’ve seen have the same issue.)
