Oscar B Jacobson Estate CollectionJacobson Provenance My grandparents were Oscar Brousse Jacobson and Sophie Jacobson. As founder and first Director of the School of Art at the University of Oklahoma, Oscar Jacobson devoted significant time and energy in support of Native American arts and artists. He taught, nurtured and developed the group of young Native American artists known as the Kiowa Six, among many others. In honor of those efforts nationwide and internationally, the Kiowas honored Jacobson by making him honorary chief of the Kiowa Tribe on July 26th 1928. The tribe presented him with Regalia made for him for that ceremony. Before he died, my grandfather gifted that Regalia to me. In addition to that regalia, both of the Jacobsons collected a variety of Native American items. Some of these items were given to me directly by each of them, some I inherited upon the death of each of them, and the remainder I from my mother, Yolande Jacobson Sheppard upon her death. All of the items have been in possession of the Jacobson and Sheppard families continuously. Sim C.
