In case you didn’t and want to know: Scarabs were significant and popular throughout ancient Egypt, used both as functional seals and in funerary practices. Primarily worn as amulets and rings they were inscribed serving as personal or administrative seals. Symbolically the scarab was considered the divine embodiment of the morning sun and regarded as a symbol of the eternal cycle of life, rebirth and regeneration. During the New Kingdom “heart scarabs” were incorporated in to a rite during the mummification process. The heart, considered the center of both the intellect and mind therefore believed to be the most important organ, was left in the deceased. Heart scarabs were hung around the mummy’s neck with a gold wire. The back of the scarab was inscribed on the reverse with the name of the deceased often along with all or part of a spell from the Book of the Dead to ensure the deceased was received favorably in to the afterlife.
