Description: Maw & Co., Ltd. - Circa 1882 "Four Flowers" -- Antique * Majolica * Aesthetic Movement -- "Presenting an excellent condition antique tile, featuring four different floral designs, covered in a brilliant Brown monochrome glaze." This beautiful tile was created by the greatest tile maker in the world, "Maw & Company, Ltd," which stood on the banks of the River Severn, in Shropshire, England in the year 1882. In the last part of the 19th Century, this company was the World's largest tile maker. Yet, it manufactured tiles of the most excellent art and quality, which could be found anywhere in England, despite their high volume of production. This is only proof of the skill and dedication of the company's employees, and especially that of Mr. George Maw, himself. This tile presents four different, stylized, flower vignettes, in a lattice format, embossed in slight relief upon its biscuit, and its design is embraced by both the British Aesthetic, and Arts & Crafts, Movements. This tile may be placed in a very bright location, where direct sunlight may illuminate its colorful brilliance. Don't worry, these tiles are perfectly happy living in the full light of the Sun, and will never fade, or be effected by its heat. Condition: Excellent The tile presents very well, and its rich glaze is as brilliant, as the day it came out of the bottle kiln. This tile escaped the hazards of the fireplace, with its heat, soot, coal shuttle, and cast iron tools, and frame, by being a back-splash tile. But, even if this tile escaped the coal smoke and mortar, the verso is not pristine as it has been handled and cleaned with vinegar during the last 142 years. The diagonal, "zig-zag," grip pattern is typical of Maw & Company in 1882. It is clearly embossed with: "Maw & Co." A central company badge: "FLOREA" "MAW" "SALOPIA" And, factory location: "BROSELY" "SALOP" Please examine our provided high-resolution scans of this tile to determine its exact state. *Size: 6" x 6" * Maker: Maw & Co., Ltd. * * Style: Aesthetic Movement * * Type: Majolica * Date: Circa 1882 1/1500769/227
