Description: c. 1880s; The Vapo-Cresolene Co. - New York Antique quack medical device used to vaporize medical solutions in late 19th century hospitals and sick rooms. This piece is meant to hold and vaporize cresolene, a liquid disinfectant made from coal tar once used to treat ailments it was advertised as being able to cure any number of issues including whooping cough, croup, catarrh, colds, and other such diseases. Despite knowing about the carcinogenic properties, it was mass-produced until 1906 when the FDA stepped in and found that, in addition to being carcinogenic, the solution also contained large amounts of radium. Unfortunately, this did nothing to slow sales until after the war, and cresolene was finally discontinued as a medical treatment in 1957. Think of it as an early essential oil diffuser. (Pictured bottle of cresolene not included) The actual device features an ornate scroll motif design on which both the vaporizing implement and glass storage vessel are affixed. Exhibits minor tarnish and patination. 4" W x 3" D x 6.5" H Please refer to photos regarding condition.
