However, as time went on, Christian kingdoms in the north, such as Asturias, Navarre, León, Castile, Aragon, and Portugal, gradually expanded their territories through military campaigns and the gradual reconquest of Muslim-controlled areas. These Christian kingdoms, known as the "Reconquista states," were motivated by religious, political, and territorial factors. The Reconquista was a long and complex process that involved shifting alliances, territorial gains and losses, and intermittent warfare between Christian and Muslim forces.
