He was a Hebrew dialect vaudeville comedian. His most famous monologue was a speech called “Levinsky at the Wedding”. Originally an accountant in Philadelphia, his vaudeville act consisted of funny stories and songs. His comic monologs were about a Jewish immigrant’s mishaps. Still, the act wore out its welcome and popularity in the U.S. His last decades were spent working the British music hall stage, where he was very popular. As a film actor, Rose known for Looking on the Bright Side (1932), Money Talks (1932) and L'argent par les fenêtres (1933). Rose died on September 13, 1935 in London, England. His recording career began in 1903 for Edison on wax cylinder records. Rose’s most famous records, Levinsky at the Wedding series, were made for Columbia in 1917. All 4 parts are included in this release. 2 sessions for Edison diamond disc from 1922 are also included. Rose’s last sessions recorded in 1932, Mrs. Blumberg’s Jewish Boarding House, finish off this release and bring it to a humorous conclusion.
