Description: Hungary: Silver and Bronze Large Horthy Bravery Medals 1939-1944. Admiral Miklos Horthy, Regent of the Kingdom of Hungary, established the Bravery Medal on April 14, 1939. There were eventually four grades: bronze (40 mm), small silver (35 mm), large silver (40 mm) and gold (40 mm). The early silver medals were made of and hallmarked for silver, and are scarce. Most of the silver medals awarded were silvered bronze, as is this medal (see Kleitman, K.G. The Medal Collector (Oct. 1956) pp. 4-5). Virtually all Horthy bravery medals were awarded for heroism on the Russian front; under German pressure, Hungary declared war on the USSR on June 27, 1941. Hungary fared badly on the Russian front, with an estimated 100,000 Hungarian soldiers KIA/DOW; 35,000 wounded, and 60,000 taken prisoner. An estimated 1,671 silver medals were awarded, and ca. 25,842 bronze medals were awarded. The silver gilt on this medal has worn through at a couple of tiny spots on Horthy’s cheek, therefore very fine or better condition; on what is almost certainly the original ribbon. The bronze medal is near extremely fine condition and also on what is almost certainly the original ribbon.
