About the Book: Idaho, though bountifully endowed with breathtaking scenes of rugged grandeur and great natural resources, is perhaps the least known of all states. All New England could fit comfortably within its borders, yet Idaho’s population is less than that of tiny Rhode Island. Located in a comparatively isolated section of the country, pioneers who did come to Idaho were generally passing through to the fertile lands of Washington and Oregon rather than remaining as settlers. To an exent the pattern was broken in the latter half of the nineteenth century when fabulous mineral deposits were found in the mountains. Birch Creek Valley, lying snug between two towering mountain ranges, sprang to life during this period, some 10,000 people living within its thirty-mile-long and six-mile-wide confines. Today the inhabitants and buildings are gone and in their place are but a sparse scattering of ranchers. This book tells for the first time the fascinating, often dramatic story, of the rise and decline of Birch Creek Valley, now an almost forgotten community. Discovery of the Viola mine is a stranger-than-fiction story itself. In 1881, hunting for horses turned out to graze in the Beaverhead Mountains high over Birch Creek Valley, William McKay sat down to rest on the upturned roots of a fallen tree. “As he sat there,” Pearl M. Oberg writes, “he noticed some peculiar-looking ore clinging to the roots. Taking some in his hand, he was surprised to find it extremely heavy. After his short rest he put the matter out of his mind and continued searching for the missing horses. “Some months passed, and young McKay was in the Wood River district at Hailey watching ore being loaded into railroad cars for shipment to Salt Lake City. Curiously he noted the similarity between this ore and the ore he had seen in Birch Creek Valley. Turning to a bystander, he asked, “What kind of ore is it?’ The answer was, ‘Lead!’ Filled with excitement, McKay returned to Birch Creek, accompanied by a partner. It didn’t take them long to find the fallen tree and file their claim.” This was the mine that was to supply one-fourth of the lead at that time mined in the United States, use 16,000 horses and mules to haul the bullion to the railroad and yield a fortune in dividends—not shared by McKay and his partner. The mining boom and prosperity had arrived in Birch Creek Valley. Here is the true story of those miners, ranchers, homesteaders, traders, fortune hunters and the massacre by the Nez Percé Indians. Carefully researched by the author and colorfully written, this account of a little-known chapter in the nation’s history will find a welcome place on the shelves of all devotees of Americana.
