This picture is both whimsical and haunting at the same time. Oil on canvas, signed bottom left and dated 1951. Heavy impasto in places. Condition is good for age with some paint loss and a small puncture center left. All defects are shown in pictures. Replacement frame measures approximately 17” x 14” to ends of frame. Sight approximately 13.5” x 10.5”. A printmaker and painter in abstract style who used wide brushmarks, Henry Kallem was born in Philadelphia. His father was Morris Kallem, a portrait painter, with whom he studied, and his brother was sculptor Herbert Kallem. Henry Kallem's studio was in New York City, and he and his associates were a part of a group of modernists who called themselves 'the 28th Street Group of Modernists' because they hung around the Henry and David Rothman Frame Shop on 28th Street. Kallem and others of this group also spent much time in the summers painting in Provincetown and Monhegan Island.
