Autism used to be a rare disorder, so that the majority of doctors never saw it in their practice and most people had never heard of it. Fifteen years ago in western countries the incidence of autism used to be on average one child in 10,000. Now according to the UK Department of Health 1 in 166 children in Great Britain are diagnosed with autism.
