Description: Unusual for most coins, this one features the national bird—the Quetzal—on both sides. The tiny lettering on the shield ("Libertad 15 de Septiembre 1821") commemorates the nation's independence from Spain, and the lettering on the reverse pillar ("10 de Junio 1871") marks the "Liberal Revolution" which, under the leadership of Justo Rufino Barrios, began the modernization of the country's economy. The clearly visible lines of the Quetzal's tail feathers, and the easily legible lettering on the shield and pillar demonstrate that this coin was rarely circulated, if at all. A beautiful and rare coin.
