The Gibson Johnny A Signature model was built from 2004 to 2013, using a heavily routed one piece Mahogany Back / Side unit and Maple top, similar in construction and size to the CS-336. It’s not completely hollow, but has supports under the bridge and Bigsby B7.Johnny A has been a highly respected guitarist since the 1970s and has played and led many prominent bands – some his own, others not, like the J. Geils Band and in 2015, joined the Yardbirds.Drawing from concepts and basic body dimensions used in the Gibson CS-336, the Gibson Johnny A Signature model starts with a block of Mahogany, cut and internally routed to create sides and supports for a carved figured Maple top with distinctive not-quite-F-holes. Visually distinct from the CS-336, the pointed ‘Florentine’ cutaways on the Johnny A are much closer to the Gibson Barney Kessel or Trini Lopez Custom (but not Standard!) models. The neck is Mahogany, with a bound Ebony fingerboard and distinctive three-piece inlays that are carried onto the bound headstock. All the hardware is gold-plated, including the Kluson Deluxe style tuners. The scale length is often listed as being 25.5 inches or 647.7mmDating takes a little effort.
