Description: Germany: Her People and Their Story, A H Gifford, 1899, Lothrop pub., 1st editio. - author wrote foreward in 1898. - First Edition (deduced). - please forgive the poor interior photos....bad camera setting.- 5.75 x 8.15 inches approx.; 604 pages including Index and Chronological Table; hdbk.- Some pages, especially at the end, are not yet separated (use a long, sharp knife). - note: interesting comprehesive history book on Germany, as it was written when that nation was at apex of power...by far the most powerful force in Europe, even without Austria. Under Otto Van Bismark, Germany even began to challenge Britain's dominance over the seas. The author proudly states that Germany is now the "arbiter of the destiny of Europe". The extent to which that was true could not have been foretold....in fewer than 15 more years, Germany's sense of destiny would help bring on WW I. Condition: Very Good Condition for this vintage history. Book cover shows very little wear of any kind. No owner name/mark inside. Hinges/binding are tight/strong. Very little or no age-tanning to paper. Small edge-tears repaired on 3 pages. Otherwise, interior is all clean....no marks, tears, creases or stains found. Nice copy, and sturdy for normal use.
