At 10, his father challenged him to either read 50 pages of a book or paint a picture every day; Earle chose to do both. His artistic skills developed rapidly, and by age 14, he held his first solo exhibition in France. At 21, the ambitious young artist bicycled from Hollywood to New York, painting 42 watercolors along the way to fund his journey. During the Great Depression, Earle traveled extensively, exhibiting his work and seeking ways to make a living. In his twenties, he began creating Christmas cards, initially cutting his designs out of linoleum and printing them. This venture turned into a lifelong tradition. In 1939, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York acquired one of Earle's paintings for its permanent collection. In 1951, he joined Walt Disney Studios as a background painter, contributing to many popular and award-winning animated films such as "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" (which won the 1954 Academy Award for Animated Short Film), "Peter Pan," and "Lady and the Tramp." Earle's distinctive style, background, and color work were especially notable in "Sleeping Beauty," which featured a magical, medieval style that marked a departure from Disney's earlier aesthetics. After 15 years in animation, Earle returned to painting full-time. Over the following decades, he had numerous solo exhibitions across the United States and internationally, including in London, Japan, and France. In 1991, he published his illustrated autobiography "Horizon Bound on a Bicycle" and a book titled "The Complete Graphics of Eyvind Earle and Selected Poems and Writings, 1940-1990." After a lifetime of artistic achievements in both animation and painting, Eyvind Earle passed away on July 20, 2000. Earle's early work was strictly realistic, but by the age of 21, his style had evolved to a magical simplicity and directness, influenced by the works of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Rockwell Kent, and Georgia O’Keeffe. This transition resulted in a wildly popular style characterized by unique perspectives of landscapes, capturing both the grandeur and simplicity of the countryside. Earle's paintings, which he described as both primitive and mysteriously advanced, conveyed a profound search for truth. As he put it, "For 70 years I’ve painted paintings, and I’m constantly and everlastingly overwhelmed at the stupendous infinity of Nature. Wherever I turn and look, there I see creation. Art is creating … art is the search for truth." Thank you for looking! See my eBay store for more art! Please consider the photos of the actual artwork as part of the description.
