CHRISTMAS VERY RARE Edward Curtis cyanotype. Excellent Condition. “On Klickitat River, Wisham, 38-x, X3073, large” inscribed on the reverse, perhaps his original labeling. Image is 6” x 7 ½”. Mounted loosely in a cardboard frame, easily remounted if desired. One of 4 that I have listed. Make a package offer? Cyanotypes are valuable and unique in that they are original, untouched images. Cyanotypes were used by Edward Curtis in the field to determine if newly made negatives had the contrast, focus and quality he required. He developed negatives in the field, When dry, he placed a negative directly over Cyanotype paper until a positive image appeared on the Cyanotype paper. Cyanotypes were developed by sunlight. Cyanotype paper came in 8 inch wide rolls. Curtis tore off a piece 6 inches long to develop a Cyanotype When using a 6x8 inch negative. That ’s why the long sides of Curtis Cyanotypes may be slightly irregular. Curtis began using the Cyanotype process when the quality of Nitrate Cellulose negatives allowed him to use the smaller 6x8 inch negatives. All of the Curtis Cyanotypes we’ ve seen are 6x8 inches, or smaller. The backs of Curtis Cyanotypes were almost always marked with information about the Tribe and/or location of each photo. Most Curtis Cyanotypes are marked with a letter, followed by a number. That is how Curtis organized his field negatives and Cyanotypes. Cyanotypes are prints that are blue-hued during the printing-out process. Curtis created a large body of cyanotypes, presumably, virtually all of his 40,000+ negatives were initially printed as cyanotypes, however, few of them survived.
