No. 101 Message of the President of the United States... [Caption title]9" x 5.5" Sewn self-wrappers, 30 pp. Extracted. A bit of light scattered spotting, some wear and adhesive residue at binding, a very good copyAn uncommon copy of a Senate Resolution (34th Congress, 1st Session, August 1856), "calling for information respecting any correspondence of proceedings in relation to the self-styled Vigilance Committee in California."The San Francisco Committee of Vigilance was a vigilante group formed in 1851, originally in response to the Australian immigrant gang the Sydney Ducks. During the summer of 1856, the Committee grew to take up against civil crimes as well as rampant political corruption. Claiming 6,000 in its ranks, the Committee worked very closely with the formal city government, however, and gained some prominent critics. General William Tecumseh Sherman resigned from his position as Major-general of the Second Division of Militia in San Francisco. This Executive Document shows that California Governor J. Neely Johnson appealed to President Franklin Pierce and Secretary of State W.L. Marcy for assistance. It includes correspondence and reports from United States Naval commanders in California, including David G. Farragut, trying to protect federal interests and not interfere with state responsibilities. In his advice, Attorney General Caleb Cushing said the California situation did not rise to the level necessitating federal intervention. The 1856 Committee of Vigilance dissolved on August 11, 1856, five days after this document was issued, marking the occasion with a "Grand Parade." Political power in San Francisco was transferred to a new party established by the vigilantes, the People's Party, which ruled until 1867 and was eventually absorbed into the Republican Party. An important reference into vigilante activity in California, as well as state and federal responses to it. OCLC shows ten holdings over two entries.
