The initial recruitment of this brigade included only AfricanAmerican Cavalry regiments. From theseregimental organizations came some of the most dedicated and courageoussoldiers that forged ahead to breach enemy lines, rescue comrades under fire,and protect and advance the national and regimental colors. There were 23 Medal of Honors awarded tothese brave soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry, as wellas the 24th Infantry.
