Description: BLUE & WHITE ABSTRACT DECORATED SALT CROCK FARM HOUSE KITCHEN DESCRIPTIONHere’s a really nice Blue & White stoneware salt crock produced by one of the many potteries in the Ohio Valley from very late 1800's to first third or so of the 1900's. The word SALT is accompanied with abstract decorations on each end of the word. I have been unable to locate any illustrations or descriptions of this salt so I’m referring to it as abstract salt. If someone has a better name please do let me know! The lid’s finial is fashioned as a Turk’s hat. From bottom rim to top rim it stands 4-1/4" tall with a width of 6-1/2" (it’s a bit wider than most all other B&W salts of this period), good mold, thoughtfully applied color, the word SALT and abstract designs on each end are strong with no streaks or smears.. CONDITIONThis salt and lid have no cracks or lines. The lid has two rim chips as illustrated in the photos. The crock has a couple very narrow linear glaze misses nfear the bottom front. The back bottom rim has what at first glance appears to be a post-production chip. However, it actually was created at the pottery then glazed over, so it’s not post-production damage. There are two very small weensy brown drips on the front. I expect during firing this piece was placed on a rack under another piece with brown glaze and a wee bit of glazed dripped on this salt. With the exception of the two lid rim chips as described, I find nothing that can be construed as chips, flakes, cracks, lines, slobbers, goobers, boogers, bumps, slimes, or repairs. It is a really nice piece This stoneware salt crock is every bit as lovely and functional as the day it was made, it displays really well and with its size is certain to be a terrific conversation piece! Overall this amazing piece would be an excellent addition to any collection of quality Blue & White stoneware. If you collect stoneware pieces you well know how rare these salts are, they just do not appear very often. It’s really a very sweet, special piece!
