Sodalite was named by Thomas Thomson, a Scottish chemist, because of its high sodium content. Sodalite became popular in the late 1800s after sizable deposits were discovered in Canada. Sodalite is the International Gemstone of Canada. Sodalite has had a variety of names, one of which is Princess Blue. While different stories exist about the Princess Blue name, it is probably honor of Princess Patricia of Connaught who used Sodalite in the décor of the Marlborough House in London, England. Other names encountered for Sodalite include Alomite, Bluestone, Canadian Bluestone, Canadian Lapis and Chameleon Sodalite. Although slightly similar to Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite is more of an ultramarine or royal blue and seldom has pyrite flecks which is characteristic of Lapis Lazuli. Colors: Sodalite comes in a wide range of colors which include royal blue, green, grey, pink and yellow mottled with dark and light (white) patches or veins. Some varieties of Sodalite have a red to violet coloring. Important Note about Color: The actual color and lightness/darkness of the stone will vary from what is displayed on your monitor. There are many reasons that can cause this visual situation, One of the more important reason is the difference between transmitted light color (such as light shining through a gemstone), color generation simulations and adjustments (such as your monitor) and reflected light (light bouncing off objects). Add to this each individual’s personal color sensitivities along with variances in ambient (surrounding) light sources used when the photo was taken as well as those where you are looking at the stone. You should expect that the actual item shading and coloring will vary from what you see on any monitor or printed piece. Sources: Most Sodalite occurs in Bahia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Greenland, India, Italy, Myanmar (Burma), Namibia, Portugal, Russia and the United States of America (primarily in Arkansas & Maine). Care: As with most all gemstone jewelry, this piece should be cleaned using lukewarm, mild, soapy water and rinsed with the same temperature water. Avoid sudden changes of temperature and, as with all fine jewelry, remove before doing any type of physical work. Traditional gemstone procedure of storing in soft cloth away from other articles of jewelry hold true, too. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners and chemicals should never be used. ____________________________________
