This Spalding "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" ball has been signed in black fountain pen by twenty-three members of the 1934 New York Yankees, including Babe Ruth (sweet spot), Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez, Earle Combs, Red Ruffing, Joe Sewell (coach), Frank Crosetti, Red Rolfe, DeShong, Hoag, Chapman, Van Atta, Heffner, MacFayden, Byrd, Jorgens, Murphy, Allen, and Saltzgaver. The signature of manager Joe McCarthy has been deemed a clubhouse by JSA. Although the Yankees finished in second place in 1934, it marked a turning point in Gehrig's fabled career, as he finally emerged from Ruth's enormous shadow. For the first time ever Gehrig finally eclipsed Ruth in home runs, hitting a league-leading 49 to Ruth's 22. Gehrig also led the league in RBI (165) and batting average (.363), which earned him the Triple Crown. The ball has light soiling and scattered a spot of toning.
