Description: Original oil painting on canvas by American WPA painter Carol Weinstock (1914-1971). The painting is a wonderful period view of the main shopping street of an unidentified Northeast art colony town such as Woodstock, Provincetown or Rockport. It is signed by the artist at bottom right and it is framed in a terrific period modernist frame of ebonised and cerused or limed oak, might be an early Heydenryk. It is oil on canvas and measures 20 x 36 inches, with frame it is 26 x 42 inches. The painting has the expected craquelure and is somewhat grimy as it is in original condition. The canvas reverse shows a couple of paper tape dots reinforcing pinholes, otherwise very fine condition. The frame has a few dings and scrapes commensurate with age and could use a cleaning and waxing. The painting likely dates to the late 30s or early 40s and may well have been executed while Weinstock was on the rolls of the WPA. (note): An ebayer messaged and mentioned that the scene jibes with her early 1950s childhood memories of Tinker St. in Woodstock. I don't know if this is correct, but some research showed that there was a "Little Shop" on Tinker St. prior to the 1960s. Carol Weinstock (1914-1971) was an American artist and educator. She was born in New York City and studied at the Art Students League of New York. During the Great Depression, Weinstock was employed in the easel painting division of the Federal Art Project of the WPA . Weinstock's work was included in a 1940 Museum of Modern Art exhibition of American color prints and she had a one man show at ACA Gallery in New York during the same year. She also exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, the Golden Gate Exposition and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Weinstock married fellow WPA artist Louis Nisonoff (1907-1979) in 1941 and their papers are preserved at the Smithsonian Institution, Archives of American Art.
