Description: Remarkably precise 3-dimensional etched copy of Albrecht Dürer’s 1504 engraving The Nativity. Amand Durand created this work in France in the 1800s by photographing an outstanding original Durer impression onto a glass slide at true size. He then transferred the image onto a copper plate and etched it into the metal. That plate, as a 3-dimensional facsimile of Dürer's original 1504 copper plate, was then inked, wiped, and printed on an intaglio press, just as Dürer did 520 years ago. From a 19th century book, with protective sheet still attached. As with some other engravings with extremely fine lines, I found it impossible to photographically capture the extraordinary clarity of detail in this work. The accuracy with which Amand Durand copied Dürer's original is startling, even for Amand Durand. “The beautiful architecture and scenery of this print hide significant symbolic meanings associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. The dilapidated state of the buildings and the vegetation sprouting from the ruins signify the birth of the new amidst the decay of the old. The draw-well and broken pitcher allude to not only the purity of the Virgin, but also to the waters of Paradise and the sacrament of Baptism. Yet while the inclusion of symbolic meaning is typical for nativity scenes of the period, Dürer's mastery of perspective was definitely unique and remarkable.” – Minneapolis Institute of Art Some stains on the front outside the image, and on the back. None would show if this was matted and framed. All are clear in the lot photos. Etched image: about 7.25 inches tall x 4.6 inches wide; plate marks: 8 tall x 5.25 inches wide; sheet: 10.3 inches tall x 6.9 inches wide. Shipped in archival glassine in a rigid mailer.
