Description: Clarke’s Bible Commentary and Critical Notes, by Adam Clarke. New York: Abingdon-Cokesbury Press, early 1900’s. Six hardcover volumes, almost 5000 pages total; each volume approx. 10½” x 7½”. Adam Clarke (1762-1832) was a British Methodist theologian and Biblical scholar. He was a prolific author and, according to all accounts, an excellent preacher. This extensive Bible commentary is his best known work, by far. It was the product of forty years of research and writing; publication was completed in 1831. It remains a foundational resource in many libraries, studied alongside newer works that can update with more recent historic, geographic, etc. discoveries. Part of the value of the commentary derives from Clarke’s considerable knowledge of many languages, both ancient and more contemporary; in examining the meaning and implications of Greek and Hebrew words and concepts in the Bible, he employs the overlapping contributions from other times, cultures, and languages. Condition is “acceptable” to “good”: binding is solid, with everything securely intact; few if any marks in the text. The spines of all six volumes have quite a bit of wear, though still attached well enough. The next owner might choose to do some minor repair. None of that, of course, hinders the value of the content. With reasonable care, this set will serve for a few more decades. Please see listing pic. Careful wrapping and fast shipping. Please look around the store. Lots of books & other media, quilt & cross stitch patterns, car mags & catalogs, home décor, and many more treasures-- and more listed every day.
