Description: 7" SCHOENHUT Humpty Dumpty CIRCUS CLOWN in GOOD to VERY GOOD ConditionThis is a wonderful version of the German firm, Schoenhut, of a traveling circus. It is the smaller sized 7” version of the clowns produced by them. The clowns were the first to be produced for the circus in 1903 and would be the oldest models of the "Humpty Dumpty" Circus. THIS IS FOR THE SMALLER CLOWN ONLY. The last picture depicts both clowns, but the larger one is found in another auction. He has a hand-painted head with the sweetest smiling face. Clowns aren’t necessarily popular, but this face has a gentle smile and less frightening. The all-wood face and body are cream colored and help depict the “make-up” needed to be a clown. The eyes and mouth are hand-painted in black and red paint respectively. The costume is ALL ORIGINAL and in great condition. The ruffle around the neck, his one-piece suit with the red stitched edging are intact. I absolutely LOVE his wooden cone-shaped hat (one of the earlier versions).Nearly all the paint is intact to the body. The body has 4 joints, and they are completely intact. The biggest condition issues are the paint on the face and back of the head. The paint for his eyes and mouth are unaffected. He is also missing one of his leather ears. PLEASE SEE PICTURES for complete description. Please see other auctions-- I have 3 pieces of Schoenhut's HUMPTY DUMPTY CIRCUS for sale right now-- a smaller clown, a larger clown, and a horse. I can combine shipping if needed.BACKGROUND TO THE SCHOENHUT “HUMPTY DUMPTY” CIRCUS was found on the web in the Cavender Diary (brothers) from 1915.“In 1903, Albert Schoenhut debuted his Humpty Dumpty clown toy. He modeled the toy after the popular play and clown at the time, Humpty Dumpty. Until that time, Schoenhut made toy pianos, dolls and wooden blocks. His toy clown was so successful that within a year he had snowballed into a complete line of circus toys. The Humpty Dumpty Toy Circus. Over the next 30 years, Schoenhut continued to build his circus line to include a ringmaster, lion tamers, carnival wagons, tents, a complete orchestra, minstrels and acrobats, way too many clowns and a full menagerie of exotic animals. Almost all of the figures were fully poseable with slots in their feet so they could climb ladders, swing on trapeze, or ride on the back of a mount” (Cavender Diary, 1915). Schoenhut produced the Humpy Dumpty Circus from 1903- 1935.I AM A NON-SMOKER and have NO PETS.
