Description: With the Industrial Revolution, water control became a major issue. Since Tourcoing and Roubaix were not located near a river, there was a shortage of water to power the machines during the 19th century. Without water, the entire textile industry was compromised. In 1860, the cities of Roubaix and Tourcoing joined forces to launch major works. The project consisted of capturing water from a river, the Lys, which flows about ten kilometers away, and transporting it to the factories. This water, due to its origin, was unfit for consumption. It was only intended for industrial use. On August 15, 1863, on the occasion of the Emperor's Day, the Tourcoing municipal council organized festivities to celebrate the arrival of the waters of the Lys. Obverse : conjoined caot of arms of the two cities of Roubaix and Tourcoing Reverse : "Fête d'inauguration des eaux de la Lys à Roubaix et Tourcoing / Août 1863" (Inauguration celebration of the waters of the Lys in Roubaix and Tourcoing / August 1863) Diameter : 23 mm or 0,9 inch Metal : bronze
