ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by James Charles Allen (1790? - 1833) from an original study by John Christian Schetky (11 August 1778 – 29 January 1874). Schetky was descended from an old Hungarian-Transylvanian family, which, for political reasons, had emigrated to Leipzig at the beginning of the 16th century. His father was Johann Georg Christoff Schetky, a celebrated composer and cellist, who had settled in Edinburgh in 1773, and had married Maria Anna Theresa Reinagle, also of Hungarian descent, in 1774. John Christian was the couple's fourth son. He was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh, where he formed a lifelong friendship with his near-contemporary, Walter Scott. PROVENANCE: This print was published in "Provincial Antiquities and Picturesque Scenery of Scotland", by Sir Walter Scott, published in parts between 1819–26. Published by John and Arthur Arch, Cornhill and William Blackwood, Edinburgh. In 1818 William Turner received a commission for a series of plates showing Scottish locations which were to be accompanied by a text by Sir Walter Scott, who had proposed the project. The venture was to be financed by shareholders who, besides Turner, included other illustrators of the work - Edward Blore and Scott's friend, the amateur landscape painter, the Revd John Thomson of Duddingston - as well as the engravers George Cooke, Henry Le Keux and William Lizars. The series was published by Rodwell and Martin of New Bond Street, London and was originally intended to contain sixty-five plates in twelve parts. In 1823, however, after poor financial returns, it was decided to limit Provincial Antiquities to ten paper-bound parts, comprising five plates each, with illustrations by other prominent artists including A.W. Callcott and Alexander Nasmyth in addition to Turner, Blore and Thomson. TYPE: Antique plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is a nothing on the reverse side which is blank. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Hawthornden Castle is located on the River North Esk in Midlothian, Scotland. The castle lies a mile to the east of Roslin, and is just downstream from Roslin Castle. Hawthornden comprises a 15th-century ruin, with a 17th-century L-plan house attached. The house has been restored and now serves as a writer's retreat. Man-made caves in the rock beneath the castle have been in use for much longer than the castle itself. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints.
